TMJ Treatment

The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the joint that connects your lower jaw to the rest of your head. Sometimes simply called the jaw joint, the TMJ can become stressed or misaligned due to injury, trauma, arthritis, bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching), or other factors. When this happens, you may develop painful symptoms. Some common symptoms of TMJ disorders include:

  • Inability to open your mouth very wide
  • Clicking, grinding, and popping sounds in the jaw joint when you open and close your mouth
  • A stuck or “locked” jaw
  • Painful chewing and speaking
  • Pain in the jaw, face, ears, neck, shoulders, and back

Our experienced dentists provide different options of TMJ treatment to relieve the painful symptoms of TMJ disorders and to help your jaw joint function optimally once again. We may suggest occlusal (bite) splints or night guards. Occlusal splints and night guards are used to prevent teeth grinding and clenching while you sleep, and they can hold your jaw in a better position as well to help relieve stress on the TMJ.
